yesterday (11 november) was saint martin’s day, when the bottled young wines of the new harvest are released to the public at 11:11 in the morning. st. martin’s day, or martinmas, is synonymous in the czech republic with the sampling of young wines and goose feasts. the czech version of beaujolais nouveau (svato martinské víno) is celebrated in prague and throughout the country. wine shops and restaurants pour the first of the st. martin’s wines at 11:11 a.m. two major outdoor markets also exhibit numerous winemakers, including the náplavka market, not far from our apartment.
maria and i made a quick visit to the madcap event at Jiřího z Poděbrad square, hoping to avoid the crowds at the náplavka market last year. to no avail, had to fight to get some of the new wine. white always better than the reds here, but was fun nevertheless. below is just to the the right of the madness, in front of the famous, strange church designed by
the slovene architect, Jože Plečnik, built between 1929 and 1932.
